Hoy quiero hablar del Proyecto ESpatriados desde un punto de vista personal, como Elizabeth Casua y no "escondida" detrás de la colaboración en este proyecto como suelo hacerlo.
Hace varios meses vi (en un grupo de españoles en Facebook) que unas chicas buscaban historias de españoles que estuvieran viviendo en Dublín para contribuir con ellas en un proyecto artístico. Como gestora cultural que soy, he de reconocer que esto es un gran reclamo para mi, me resultaba muy atractivo participar y tratar de ayudar en lo posible en un proyecto así.
Así fue como conocí a las coordinadoras del Proyecto ESpatriados Marta Gómez Saenz e Isabel María Plaza. Recuerdo encontrarme frente a dos chicas jóvenes llenas de entusiasmo y deseosas de trasmitir lo que muchos pensamos pero no decimos o no sabemos materializar en palabras u otro medio de expresión. Ellas querían plasmar qué hay detrás de esos españoles que continuamente van dejando atrás su país, familias, amigos, etc. Y con ello también otros interrogantes tales como si este paso se da porque se quiere o porque no se encuentra otra salida. Plantea que salir adelante no siempre implica terminar donde se pensaba que se iba a terminar, en definitiva plantea la búsqueda de identidad y futuro. Por esta razón las coordinadoras cuestionan desde el principio que no se nos debe tratar como a un número. No cabe generalizar con un número tan importante de españoles que hemos dejado nuestro país en diferentes fechas por diferentes circunstancias. Todos tenemos nombres y apellidos, todos hemos dejado atrás cosas positivas y negativas, todos buscamos nuestro lugar en la vida y deseamos que sea de la forma más digna posible. Ello va a implicar esfuerzo, sufrimiento pero también gratificación y orgullo por cada cosa que conseguimos.
No estoy de acuerdo cuando se dice que los españoles no luchamos por nuestros derechos como deberíamos. Más bien pienso que los tiempos han cambiado y las formas y lugares de lucha también. Marta e Isa son unas luchadoras, y ellas no se han conformado con lo que tenían, han batallado por lo que les gusta y sacar a la luz que muchas personas, los ESpatriados, también luchamos por lo mismo, por lo que queremos y por una vida mejor.
Considero que la Exposición ESpatriados ha sido un éxito desde el mismo momento que se originó dado el objetivo que tenía, pero por si fuera poco, ha sido una prueba más de que las personas creen en ellas mismas y en otras. Ha sido un proyecto donde la colaboración entre los propios ESpatriados y los Irlandeses ha sido pilar fundamental para su funcionamiento. La afluencia de público, los mensajes de gratitud y agradecimiento que los visitantes han ido dejando, las reflexiones a las que han invitado las pinturas y el libro de fichas de la exposición no son más que la prueba tangible del éxito de ESpatriados, un proyecto que sus coordinadoras quieren seguir haciendo crecer y es mi deseo que así sea.
Today I would like to talk about the ESPatriados Project from my own perspective ―as Elizabeth Casua, and not ‘hiding’ behind my participation in this project as I usually do.
A few months ago, I learnt through a Facebook group that two Spanish girls were gathering stories of Spaniards living in Dublin to put together an art project. I found the project fascinating, and being a event manager for cultural projects myself, I could not help but to contact them to collaborate in the project as much as possible.
And so I meet Marta Gómez Saenz and Isabel María Plaza, the artists behind the ESPatriados Project. I remember meeting two young girls full of excitement and enthusiasm, eager to materialise what many of us think but do not say or do not know how to express otherwise. They wanted to show to the world what was behind all the Spaniards that are leaving their country, families and friends ―something that leads to more controversial questions, such as whether they took that step because they wished to do so, or because there had no other choice. The project suggests that going forward does not always mean to finish our journey where we thought we would, and make us think about our search for our identity and future. Because of that, from the very start the artists behind ESPatriados raise the claim that people should not be treated as numbers: the number of Spaniards who emigrated through these years is so high, and their personal circumstances are so different, that is just not possible to make generalisations. We emigrants we all have names, we all left behind positive and negative things, we all try to find our place in the world and do so with dignity. It will take effort. We may suffer on the way. But the quest will be equally rewarding, making us proud of every little achievement.
I do not agree when they say that Spanish people do not fight for our rights the way we should. I just think that our fighting arenas, as well as our weapons, have evolved with the times. Marta and Isa are real fighters of our time ―they did not content themselves with what they had. Instead, they stood for their passion and worked to put the spotlight on our personal battles. After all, we all fight for the same thing: to fulfil our dreams, and for a better life.
I think the ESPatriados Exhibition was a success from its very inception due to the goal that it pursued. But it also evidences that people believe in themselves and in other people: the close collaboration between the Spanish immigrants who participated in the project and the Irish locals who supported it has been key to make it happen. The public who came to the exhibition, their messages of gratitude, the issues upon which the portraits invited us to reflect, the ESPatriados booklet… These are all tangible proof of the success of this project, which the artists are already planning to take to the next level. And I hope they will!
